I hate the “science is just another religion” canard, which is usually passed on by people with a fundamental misunderstanding about the nature of science.
There’s mystery in our most basic observation of the universe. We know of four fundamental forces (gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear interactions), maybe a fifth (dark energy), but why those? Who knows.
Science is about whittling down the mystery so we can hold it apart from everything else and reflect on it alone.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about living a life it’s that you need to keep moving, and if there’s another thing it’s that you really should quit your job every once in a while and take on something new, maybe even something that seems crazy and scares the hell out of you. — Jonathan Coulton (via meaghano via marco) (via jackcheng)
